In the first quarter of 2026, the new ABRSM piano and vocal syllabus was officially implemented across Singapore. The most significant change is the updated repertoire list—nine new pieces per grade while retaining approximately 30% of classic pieces, balancing innovation and tradition. The piano syllabus adds more 20th and 21st-century works, including jazz, film scores, and contemporary classical styles. The vocal syllabus expands to include musical theatre selections and non-English art songs (such as French, German, and Italian), reflecting multicultural trends.
Another major adjustment is the refinement of marking criteria. ABRSM places greater emphasis on "overall performance" and "communication skills" rather than solely on pitch and rhythmic accuracy. Examiners now pay more attention to musical expression, stage presence, and ensemble with accompanists. For vocal candidates, clarity of lyrics and dramatic interpretation have become new加分项 (advantageous factors).
Local piano teachers report that students are showing noticeably more interest in pop and film-style pieces under the new syllabus, leading to higher practice motivation. However, some parents have expressed concerns about the more subjective marking criteria. In response, ABRSM Singapore will hold multiple teacher workshops from March to May 2026 to help local teachers familiarize themselves with the new syllabus and marking logic.
