Question on ABRSM aural exam section about clapping pulse during a passage played by the examiner.
Does the student need to clap like a metronome? or clap the rhythm of the melody? Thanks

It's been almost a century since I did ABRSM exams, but surely the student is supposed to clap the same exact rhythm of the melody at the same speed as what the examiner had just played? The examiner doesn't play during it - he listens.

Or are you talking about beating time to the music as played by the examiner? Then, he'll watch the student while he's playing the same piece.
OK, I think you're talking about the early grades:

To clap the pulse of a piece played by the examiner, and to identify whether it is in two time or three time. The examiner will start playing the passage, and the candidate should join in as soon as possible, clapping in time and giving a louder clap on the strong beats. The examiner will then ask whether the music is in two time or three time. The candidate is not required to state the time signature.

The student claps the beats, louder on the strong beats.
