Preparing for Sight-Reading and Aural Tests

Beyond the performance pieces, sight-reading and aural tests are often where piano exam candidates lose the most avoidable marks — and also where short, consistent practice can bring the fastest improvement. Many students spend most of their preparation time polishing repertoire, while neglecting daily practice of these two skills.

Improving sight-reading comes down to volume rather than difficulty — students are generally advised to spend ten to fifteen minutes a day reading through music slightly easier than their current level, to build quick note recognition and rhythmic response. Aural skills can be strengthened through daily habits such as singing scales, identifying rhythmic patterns, and listening for harmonic changes in recordings.

Pianoshop.sg reminds candidates that while sight-reading and aural tests carry less weight than the performance pieces, they are often what separates a good result from a distinction — and deserve real attention in the final stretch of exam preparation.
