In the first quarter of 2026, a notable change has emerged in Singapore's vocal exam market: more candidates are choosing live piano accompaniment over pre-recorded backing tracks. According to local accompanists, booking volumes in January and February increased by approximately 50% year-on-year, with some popular accompanists fully booked through late March.
This shift is closely linked to the new syllabus guidelines from ABRSM and Trinity. Both exam systems have explicitly increased the weighting of "ensemble with accompaniment" and "live interaction" in their marking criteria. Examiners note that candidates using live accompaniment tend to perform better in breath control, rhythmic flexibility, and emotional delivery, resulting in greater musical coherence. While backing tracks offer convenience and lower cost, they have inherent disadvantages in subtle rhythmic synchrony and dynamic responsiveness.
On the other hand, professional accompaniment resources in Singapore remain relatively limited. Exam accompaniment fees typically range from S200 per session, excluding rehearsal time. Many parents choose to have their children work consistently with the same accompanist throughout exam preparation to build chemistry. Some piano teachers are also expanding into accompaniment services, creating a hybrid revenue model of "piano teaching + accompaniment."
