Singapore Exam Candidates Hit Q1 Record High

In the first quarter of 2026, the number of piano and vocal exam candidates in Singapore reached an all-time high for the period. According to multiple local exam agencies, total registrations across the three major exam systems—ABRSM, Trinity College London, and LCM (London College of Music)—increased by approximately 15% compared to the same period in 2025. Children aged 6 to 12 remain the largest group, but the most significant growth comes from adult candidates (age 25+), with a year-on-year increase of over 30%.

In terms of subject distribution, piano exams still account for about 70% of registrations, while vocal exams have steadily risen to over 20%, with the remainder consisting of other instruments. The growth in vocal exams is driven by two factors: the increased singing modules in Singapore's primary and secondary music curricula, and the popularity of musical theatre culture sparking interest in vocal performance among young people.

Of particular note is the trend toward polarization between "strategic" and "interest-driven" choices when selecting exam systems. Some parents choose ABRSM for its wider recognition for school admission points, while others opt for LCM or Trinity, which place greater emphasis on live performance assessment. Additionally, video submission preparation remains popular, with approximately 40% of candidates choosing to complete exams via recorded video, saving travel time and costs.
