School Choirs Shine in Singapore’s Youth Arts Festival, Reflecting Strength in Arts Education
Singapore’s annual Youth Arts Festival saw impressive performances from school choirs across the island this year. Many primary and secondary school ensembles achieved top honours for their musicality, creativity, and expression. This success reflects the growing emphasis on the arts in Singapore's education system and the broader push for holistic development.
Choral singing has gained momentum in schools thanks to government support and evolving educational values. The Ministry of Education promotes programmes such as the School Arts Programme (SAP) and Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) grants to support choir development. Schools have also increased investments in professional music instructors, rehearsal spaces, and performance opportunities.
One secondary school choir conductor shared that regular rehearsals go far beyond singing. “Students learn to listen, communicate, and work as a team. Their pitch accuracy, rhythm, and expression improve, but so do their social and emotional skills,” she said. Parents echo this sentiment, reporting noticeable boosts in their children’s confidence and stage presence.
Choirs also serve as a vital platform for cultural and language expression. Performing a repertoire that spans classical, contemporary, and ethnic music, students deepen their musical awareness and global perspective. As Singapore continues to embrace the importance of arts education, school choirs are expected to play a prominent role in representing local talent on national and international stages.
